Hey folks. Its been almost two weeks since we touched down in Atlanta Georgia, marking the end of our trip. The past few weeks we’ve been looking back through the materials we’ve gathered, which has brought back many memories from the journey. What an experience this has been for us! Thank you so much for joining us along the way. Below is a video of us sharing a little about what the trip has meant to us…
Supongo que hemos sido malos malísimos por no haber escrito por aquí que llegamos a Atlanta sanos y salvos. Pero lo cierto es que aquí estamos. En los Estados Unidos de América.
Ha pasado mucho tiempo desde la última vez que estuve aquí, durmiendo en esta cama, duchándome en esta ducha, mirando esa ventana. En mi primera y mi última parada. Hace mucho tiempo. Como si hubiera habido un mundo entero de por medio. Pero a la vez, hace tan poco. Y es que parece casi surrealista pensar que hace exactamente ocho meses y veintiocho días que salí de por la puerta de mi casa para embarcarme en esto. A sabiendas de que iba a tardar en volver. Pero aquí estoy. A diez días de volver a tomar el avión rumbo a Barcelona. El último viaje. ¿En serio que ha pasado tanto tiempo? ¿De veras que se acabó?
Entretanto, en los últimos siete meses y medio han pasado diecisiete países: Perú, Guadalupe, Eslovaquia, Croacia, Hungría, Bosnia, Austria, Polonia, Ghana, Nigeria, Etiopía, India, Malasia, Myanmar, Camboya, Australia y Fiyi. Mucha gente. Mucha mucha gente. Y vivencias de las que no están escritas. Y de las que no están por escribir. En mis pupilas podrías comerte una sopa de cocido. Y por todo ello, desde aquí, en mi último viaje, agradezco a todos vosotros, a ti, por estar ahí, por estar todavía, por haber estado; por haberlo hecho posible; por haber venido; por haber leído, por habernos recibido, por habernos animado. Un último, grande, y definitivo GRACIAS.
Durante el tiempo que nos queda y que le queda a esta primera edición de este proyecto nuestra tarea es la de compilar los materiales y la información y organizarla de tal modo que pueda ser usada por la organización. De poco sirven 20.000 fotografías si no se encuentra la que se busca. Por ello, lo que resta son "sólo" horas -y tal vez bastantes- de "post-producción".
Y después todo acaba y todo empieza de nuevo. Y para mí es Universidad. Grado de Administración de Empresas en ESADE, Barcelona. Empezando en setiembre.
Con todo, tal vez me sorprendo pero a priori esto es un adiós -un hasta siempre; un hasta luego-. Un "bye bye" AFCI Connect. El último capítulo con mi sello en este blog. Mi último viaje.
Hoy estaba yo pensando que, aunque resulte difícil de creer, estamos ya en el último de los países de la lista. Nuestra última parada. Todavía recuerdo lo lejanas que parecían las islas Fiji al comienzo de todo esto (en espacio y en tiempo). Y sin embargo, aquí estamos. Disfrutando de lo poco que queda antes de que toque volver (sobretodo des de que ayer salió el sol tras varios días de lluvia. Aunque supongo que ya tendremos tiempo de hablar de ello).
Por ahora, comentar que ayer por la noche conocimos a Kaipati, miembro del equipo de AFCI en las islas del Pacífico que reside también en Fiji. Esta noche volveremos a encontrarlos con él, si mal no tengo entendido, en casa de su hermano.
Y el viernes por la mañana el plan es el de coger carretera y manta, Sione, Kaipati Doug y servidor y emprender viaje hacia el otro lado de la isla, el oeste. Dirección Nadi. Las distancias aquí no son demasiado largas, como es lógico. Tres horas bastarían para recorrer el trayecto Suva - Nadi. Sin embargo, nuestra idea es la de hacer altos en el camino. En los días que nos quedan hasta el martes cuando volemos desde Nadi a Los Ángeles, vamos a retomar el espíritu aventurero y asistir a diversas actividades culturales para intentar capturar el estilo de vida de la isla (un ejemplo potencial de esto es ir a ver a las personas ésas de los documentales de la tele que caminan sobre piedras quemando y tal) y distintos ministerios en los que Kaipati está involucrado en el otro lado de la isla.
Veremos como acaba todo. Ya os iremos contando.
(English: Today I was thinking that, though it may be hard to believe, we are already in the last of the countries of the list. Our last stop. I can still remember how far away seemed the Fiji Islands when we started this (in space and time). And yet, here we are. Enjoying the little that is left before it's time for us to come back (specially since yesterday the sun came out after few days of rain).
For now, yesterday night we met Kaipati, AFCI Pacific nations team member living as well here in Fiji. Tonight we'll be meeting him again, if I'm not wrong, at his brother's place.
And Friday morning the plan is to hit the road, Sione, Kaipati, Doug and my self to undertake a journey to the other side of the island, the west. Towards Nadi. Distances here are not very big, of course. Three hours would be enough to make it from Suva to Nadi. However, our idea is to stop along the way. For the last days that are left before we fly out of Nadi to Los Angeles next Tuesday, we are going to take again our adventure spirit and chase several cultural activities to try to capture the life style of the island (a potential example of that would be go to see those people on the TV documentaries that walk over burning stones) and various ministries that Kaipati is involved with on his side of the island.
We'll see how it all ends up. We'll be letting you know.)
This morning we meet up with some men and women involved in some cool things like prison ministry, helping women out of the sex trade, and an outreach to taxi drivers. It was a good group to network with and help AFCI as it gets a base in the country. Out of that meeting came some good ideas, and we are hoping that over the next week some of those discussions turn into progress here on the ground. We’re excited to see how things develop, and it could turn into a HUGE answer to prayer.
In the afternoon we got out for a hike in the jungles. I was really excited for an expedition into, what I imagined would be, the untouched rain forest of Fiji. BUT, that is not exactly what we found. Although the picture I’ve posted might lead you to believe we are miles away from anything resembling civilization, if you look closely you might be able to tell that the waterfall was actually made from poured concrete! Haha, I guess they don’t put that in a caption on the post cards.
Esta mañana nos reunimos con algunos hombres y mujeres involucrados en cosas muy interesantes como el ministerio en la prisión, ayudar a mujeres a salir de la prostitución, y el ministerio entre los taxistas. Fue un buen grupo con el que reunirse y de ayuda para AFCI mientras sigue tratando de establecerse en el país. De la reunión salieron buenas ideas, y se espera que durante la semana próxima mucho de lo que se discutió acabé materializándose en progresos reales. Estamos muy contentos de ver cómo las cosas suceden, y podría acabar convirtiéndose en una GRAN respuesta a las oraciones.
Por la tarde nos fuimos de excursión por la selva. Yo estaba muy emocionado con la expedición a, lo que pensaba serían, las junglas vírgenes de Fiji. PERO, eso no fue exactamente lo que encontramos. Aunque la foto que adjunto puede inducir a creer que estamos a quilómetros de distancia de cualquier trazo de civilización, si la miras detenidamente puede que llegues a apreciar que la cascada está echa ¡de cemento! Supongo que eso no lo ponen en el pie de foto de las postales.
When was the last time you sat around drinking muddy water for 5 hours? Well, here in Fiji, on any day of the week, it wouldn’t be hard to find someone within walking distance doing just that. Kava is a drink unique to the pacific islands and carries with it centuries of tradition and ceremony. It is a sign of welcome and hospitality as well as a time for fellowship and laughter.
How is Kava made? Powdered Kava plant is put into a seeping bag and placed into a bowl of water. The bag is squeezed repeatedly until the water is mirky with the mild sedative found in the plant.
How is Kava drunk? Kava is not for sipping. In fact, people bring along something to chase the Kava with because the taste is, well, like muddy water. Coconut shells are passed around, and by the end of the session each person might have drunk several gallons.
What happens from drinking Kava? Personally, the first thing I noticed was that my tongue felt numb. Then my chair started feeling really comfortable, very very comfortable, BUT I also really needed to use the bathroom (repeat scenario several times). The night finished by slipping into bed and falling asleep immediately at 2 am.
From all the countries we’ve visited, I’d say that Fijians know how to chill the best!
(Español: ¿Cuándo fue la última vez que te sentaste cinco horas a beber agua embarrada? Bueno, pues aquí en Fiji, cualquier día de la semana, no es difícil encontrarse al vecino haciendo precisamente eso. Kava es una bebida característica de las islas del Pacífico, y cuenta con siglos de tradición y ceremonia. Es un signo de hospitalidad así como un tiempo de ocio y risa.
¿Cómo se hace el Kava? La raíz molida se pone en un colador a través del cual se hace pasar el agua, que se impregna del sabor, del color, y del suave sedante natural de la planta, hacia un recipiente.
¿Cómo se bebe? El Kava no es para beberlo a traguitos. De hecho, algunos se traen algo para acompañarlo porque el Kava sabe, bueno, a agua embarrada. Cáscaras de coco se pasan alrededor a modo de baso y para el final de la sesión cada uno se puede haber llegado a beber varios litros.
¿Qué pasa al beber Kava? Personalmente, lo primero que sentí fue cómo se me dormía la lengua. Después la silla se empezó a poner cómoda, muy muy cómoda. PERO, también se hizo necesario hacer uso del servicio (escenario que se repitió en varias ocasiones). La noche acabó metiéndose en la cama y cayendo dormido inmediatamente a las dos de la mañana.
De todos los países que he visitado, diría que los fiyianos... ¡son los que mejor se lo montan de todos!)
Hello from Fiji! We are here with Sione Veituna, AFCI’s man in the country. Fiji is a brand new country for AFCI, and Sione is still in the process of establishing himself and the ministry. Sione is actually a native of Tonga, a nearby island state, but speaks Fijian and has felt the Lord calling him to work with AFCI as the Pacific Islands Nations Director. His wife and children are still in Tonga until he is able to secure an organizational status for AFCI in the country, which would be a real answer to prayer if that could come through quickly.
During our time here we will be seeing the life of the people and the life of the church in the country, and doing what we can to gather some photo and video materials that will be helpful for AFCI’s involvement in the future.
Here are a few first impressions:
- They drink Fiji brand water, a brand I’ve found in the States, but it’s cool to drink it now that we are actually HERE.
- Respect the natives...they are HUGE - check out the picture of the tattoo on our friend’s bicep!
- Island time is flexible, people are friendly, and life is laid back.
I thought y’all might enjoy seeing a few pictures from the past couple weeks in Australia, so I’ve put some of those up too.
¡Hola desde Fiyi! Aquí estamos con Sione Veituna, responsable de AFCI en el país. Fiyi es un país nuevo para AFCI y Sione está todavía en el proceso de establecer el ministerio y establecerse a si mismo. Sione, de hecho, es nativo de Tonga, una isla cercana, pero habla fiyiano y se ha sentido llamado a trabajar como director de AFCI para las Islas del Pacífico. Su mujer y sus hijos están todavía en Tonga hasta que no se pueda registrar AFCI como organización reconocida en el país, la cual cosa sería toda una respuesta a las oraciones.
Durante nuestro tiempo aquí vamos a poder apreciar la vida de las gentes y de la iglesia en el país, y haciendo todo lo que podamos para reunir materiales que puedan ser de ayuda para el futuro de la organización en el país.
Aquí las primeras impresiones:
- Beben agua Fiji, una marca que he encontrado en los Estados Unidos (nota del traductor: pues yo en España na' de na'), pero que mola beber ahora que se está realmente AQUÍ.
- Respecto a los nativos… son INMENSOS - no se pierdan la foto del tatuaje del bíceps de nuestro amigo -.
- El tiempo en la isla es flexible, la gente es amigable, y la vida es relajada.
He pensado que tal vez disfrutarían viendo algunas fotos de los últimas semanas en Australia, así que he puesto algunas también.)
